Invest in R&D before Promoting Existing Products

July 9, 2009

Weiss D, Naik P, Weiss R. The ‘big pharma’ dilemma: develop new drugs or promote existing ones? Nat Rev Drug Discov. 2009 Jul;8(7):533-4. Epub 2009 Jun 19. PMID: 19543223.

 It makes sense:

"Our results indicate that investments in R&D have a positive effect on stock prices, and thus increase a company’s long-term value, whereas investments in promoting existing products have a negative effect on stock prices."

A thought-provoking paper. Comments?
