The PhRMA 750 - Cancer Drugs & Vaccines in Development, 2008

May 2, 2008

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. 2008 report: medicines in development for cancer. Available online.

PhRMA, the pharmaceutical industry trade association, has published an exhaustive 92-page report of compounds currently in clinical trials for the treatment of cancer and conditions related to cancer treatment. The report is current as of March 31, 2008.

The report is organized by cancer site (e.g., breast, lung) and lists product name, sponsor (usually a pharma but sometimes a hospital or government agency), specific indication, development status (Phase I, Phase II, etc) and a contact number and/or website.

A fascinating snapshot of the state of clinical research today. Entrepreneurship is strong in this sector:

  • Nearly half of the companies represented have only one compound in clinical trials.
  • Fewer than 10% have more than three compounds.
  • Just over 2% have more than 10 compounds. This elite group is led by Pfizer, Novartis and Genentech, each with more than 20 compounds in development.

The investment in treatments for rare and intractable cancers is especially impressive.
